Dave Hollis was a former Disney executive turned author, coach and speaker. He passed away last weekend, suddenly, aged just 47… days before his 48th birthday.
I’ve never met Dave, but I’d call myself a follower of his work. I read his books – Get Out Of Your Own Way and Built Through Courage – and followed his social media presence.
I followed his former wife, Rachel Hollis, and shared his surprise when she asked him for a divorce. As her own career seemed to spiral downwards with tone-deaf posts comparing herself to people such as Harriet Tubman, I distanced myself from her world but remained keyed in to Dave’s.
He seemed, from everything I saw, to be a good guy. He shut down any attempted attacks he saw towards his ex-wife, cheered everyone on, and spread a message of resilience, hope and love.
In Built Through Courage, he shared his journey through the hardest points of his life. A lot of that focused on the year that followed his marriage breaking down. He went on a journey of self-discovery, health transformation and professional adjustment too.
It’s pretty complicated to end a marriage when your spouse is also your business partner.
When I heard of his passing, I decided to listen to the audio version of Built Through Courage, read by Dave himself.
He always had what I thought was almost an old-fashioned, unrefined mid-Western charm about him. He didn’t seem like a super slick presenter, as a lot of the people in the self-help field come across.
It was good to connect with his voice, and his message, again.
What struck me was that in that book, created in 2021, Dave referenced the future a lot. He spoke about the man he wanted to be, when he looked back over his life, whether that be when he was 60 or 100. Knowing that he had recorded those words with just two years left, and would reach neither of those ages, was jarring.
In a year where I have thought about death more than ever before, it hit me again that tomorrow is promised to nobody. All of our hopes and dreams, but more importantly our fears, may never have the time they need to come to fruition.
With that possibility, isn’t it best that we do what Dave did following his divorce? Isn’t it right that we should grab every day and make the most of it, focusing on the things that truly matter and giving no time to the things that don’t?
I am recommitting to live that way, and I hope you will too.
